What is
Literature ?
Before discussing about the
appreciation of literature we must
be know the definition of literature
in general, because it will help
us more easy to understand how to
appreciate literary works.
Literature generally is one form of
creative writing that sometimes give things phenomenal,
both in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic elements.
This is an expression of human experience through language that impressive.
Contained in the literature
is ideas, thoughts, feelings, and experiences
a typical human, and
expressed in beautiful language.
Literature
is a term that does not have a universally accepted definition, but which has
variably included all written work; writing that possesses literary merit; and
language that foregrounds literariness, as opposed to ordinary language.
According
to Henry Van Dyke "Literature consist of those writing which interpret the
meaning of nature or life, in word of charms and power, touched with the
personality of the author, in artistic forms of permanent interest".
Literature
can be classified according to whether it is fiction or non-fiction, and
whether it is poetry or prose; it can be further distinguished according to
major forms such as the novel, short story or drama; and works are often
categorized according to historical periods, or according to their adherence to
certain aesthetic features or expectations.
From
the above explanation, we can know that literature is a form of creative
writing is an expression of human experience through language that impressive .

developing appreciation for reading is first selecting appropriate adolescent
literature in which students can identify and make connections. This can foster
love for reading and improve their language arts skills as well.
Literary
appreciation focuses on the adequate grasp of the definitions and applications
of traditional literary devices such as plot, character, metaphor, setting and
symbolism which may be encountered within texts.
According
to Donelson and Nilsen (2009), literary appreciation occurs in seven stages,
There are Level 1 is Pleasure and Profit (literary appreciation is a social
experience), level 2 is Decoding (literacy is developed), Level is Lose yourself (reading becomes a means of
escaping), Level 4 Find yourself (discovering identity), level 5 is Venture
beyond self (‘going beyond me’, assessing the world around them), level 6
is Variety in reading (reads widely and discusses experiences with peers), and
the last level 7 is Aesthetic purposes (avid reader, appreciates the artistic
value of reading).
